WHAT NOW SAVES US?

Introduction:

A. Some Scriptures are difficult.

1. Understanding them takes knowledge.

2. Understanding involves deeper thinking.

3. Understanding takes attention to details.

4. Understanding takes an open mind.

B. Tonight’s passage is historically a difficult passage.

Body: 1 Peter 3: 18 - 22

I. Christ Suffered.

A. Because man was sinful.

1. Wrongfully treated.
2. Misunderstood.
3. Persecuted and abused.

B. Because of man’s sinfulness.

1. We need to be freed from bondage.
2. Required death - the blood of a perfect sacrifice.

II. The Work of the Spirit.

A. Makes us alive.

1. Brings us to life before God (prodigal).
2. Shows us how to live.
3. Guides our minds.

B. Jesus worked through the Spirit.

1. By the Spirit Jesus preached.
2. He preached to those from the time of Noah.
3. What about those before Noah? After Noah, but before Abraham?

III. The Importance of Water.

A. Saved Noah and his family.

1. It saved them from God’s wrath.
2. It was the means by which God executed Hid wrath.

B. It now saves us.

1. It protects us from the wrath of God.
2. It will be the undoing of others.

C. How does it save?

1. It is not a physical bath.
2. It is an answer to God’s call.
a. God calls us out of slavery.
b. A good conscience will answer with baptism.
3. Through the resurrection of Jesus.
4 Jesus is in charge.

A. Have You Answered God’s Call?

B. Are You Saved?
